la taco trucks
These devices of vehicular mayhem have long fascinated me since my move to LA in 2006. Granted, Malibu doesn’t exactly fall prey to the swarms of taco trucks found east of the 405, but there is 1 truck that I always see in Malibu and I think the driver now recognizes me as I pass by in my car.
Here is the real reason for my post: starvation and curiosity. I love the idea of taco trucks, but I also don’t love the feeling of having more bone, feather and skin in my mouth than actual chicken meat, which has been a frequent occurrence for me with *authentic* Mexican take-out. However, last week, the smell wafting down the street was too great for me to pass up, any my growling stomach too weak to make it home.
The truck was super clean and the menu looked good, and cheap. An excellent start! Low and behold, it was an Asian fusion taco truck. Now that I had worked up the courage to actually eat from one, I felt a pang of disappointment at the absence of real Mexican food. I was kind of looking forward to living on the edge a little, in the culinary sense, although this is hardly adventurous in a global perspective. Regardless, the chicken stir-fry wrapped in a tortilla was delicious. Only in LA can the taco truck become a full-scale mobile cafe with an impressive array of cuisine options.
Now I really have to find a (Mexican) taco truck and practice my Spanish.
